Anton Nemeth

Anton Nemeth serendipitously came to ceramics from having been an innovative painter. His last series as such was an exploration of color vibration and distortion in works done on Masonite board. This ground facilitated the hard edge Detroit finish monochrome geometric shapes whose interplay fascinated him.

One day in 1995 he was visiting a potter friend, Victoria Friedman of ClayWays Studio, in Stamford, Connecticut. She was engaged on the phone and urged him to join the class of 8-12 year old children, who were attending a workshop in her studio, till she was through. Fortunately it was a long conversation, and the piece that came out of that "play" session is now in a private collection in Ottawa. That one vessel convinced his friend to let him use her studio to produce his first body of work. Between Victoria's support and the appreciation of the then Curator of Ceramics of the Connecticut State Museum, Anton continued his work in producing his very floral ...        > Read moreand lush looking vessels that are often reminiscent of under-sea creatures or Georgia O'Keefe paintings. Anton was also asked to do several guest artist demonstrations at Poly Prep School in Brooklyn, NY, where his stylistic influence can be seen in student work to this day.

The development of his style eventually led to a commission from the Arts Committee of the DaimlerChrysler Permanent Collection for an unprecedented four pieces which they went beyond their usual budget to acquire. Since that time Anton's pieces have been included in private collections from California to Italy and the Netherlands, and from Arizona to Quebec. The renowned Canadian PrimeMentor and philanthropist Kenneth G. Mills counted eleven of Anton's works in his extensive collection of fine art, and was his generous Patron in the Old World sense. He was, more importantly, Anton's Mentor in the Metaphysics of the Absolute, as well as in his art.

After being an early member of the Buffalo Arts Studio, and having studios in Tucson, AZ, Norwalk, CT, and Caledon, Ontario, Anton currently does his work just North of historic Placerville off Highway 49 in California.

Anton's philosophy claims that the artist is an ambassador between the visible and the Invisible, from which all emanates. "No act, thought, or thing has stemmed ever from anywhere else. In a day and age where education and life itself seems to celebrate the materialistic and the profane, the artist has a mission to preserve and foster that primal link with the Invisible and to exercise it. Thus the Musician, The Poet, the Dancer, and the Visual Artist, the Mathematician, anyone who is mindfully Present in their work, reminds their audience--through feeling--of the principles that allow existence to be perceived and have meaning. The function of art perhaps then can be said to inspire the viewer to look within, to feel their own Connection with Meaning. Art is a service to Mankind, a service of conscious remembrance of Source that happens in and as the feeling Nature." AZN

Acrylic & varnish on putty, ash, birch. This is a part of the restoration work I was asked to do on a '41 Mercury station wagon. Parts of the doors, body, and tail gate were filled and/or spliced in order to reatain as much original wood as possible. I was asked to match the original grain on the repairs. I did this in my studio and at the owner's shop over a period of months as the car was being restored. Tres fun! $45US/hour + travel Photo: AZN
